With 2020 finally behind us, a new year brings possibilities, excitement, and hope. Although our world has changed in many ways in the last 12 months, wanting to try out the latest makeup trends hasn't. Here are some top trends we'll be seeing in 2021 (even if it's mostly from the comfort of our homes).
#1 Graphic Liner
Wearing masks in public has definitely changed how we apply makeup, if we do so at all. Now that our eyes are the major real estate, experimentation, and creativity have filled Instagram posts and TikTok FYP’s. Graphic liner is having a moment on social media. From eye looks made with sharp lines and pops of color, the possibilities are endless for this trend.
Like a classic 60's cat-eye, pulling from vintage inspiration provides a jumping-off point to start getting creative with graphic liner (see trend #3 for more on that). You can achieve looks using a liquid eyeliner pen, such as our Ultra-Thin Liquid Eyeliner in "Black", or a cake eyeliner, like our Waterproof Color Eyeliner Gel. As face masks continue to remain a staple in our everyday lives, going graphic on the eyes is a chance to show off your personality.
#2 Colorful Mascara
In tandem with graphic liner, it's only natural that mascara in unexpected shades are trending for 2021. Whether you're looking to brighten your eyes with pops of bright blue, purple, or even green - colored mascara has become more accessible and playful as we move into the new year.
If you want to get your hands on a formula to play with, look no further than our Waterproof Color Mascara, which comes in 13 different colors perfect for experimenting. While some shades, like navy blue or burgundy, provide a slight shift from the typical black or dark brown, 2021 has welcomed bright pops of bubblegum pink or electric yellow on the lashes for major oomph.
Yearning for the trends of days gone by is nothing new when it comes to the beauty world. So it's not much of a surprise that nostalgia is a trend for 2021. Like 80’s electric blue, colorful eyeliner has made a comeback, and artists are reaching for matte eyeshadow shades that are reminiscent of the '90s. The 1960's has provided major inspiration with celebrities and models opting for the timeless cat-eye or a graphic cut crease.
Our Waterproof Color Eyeliner Gel makes it easy to achieve a colored eyeliner or cut crease look reminiscent of Twiggy. And our 10-Color Pearly Matte Eyeshadow Palette provides an easy way to transition your shimmer-shadow obsession to a more trendy matte look. While we may not be able to go back to the days of Tamagotchis and Boy Bands, at least our makeup can.
#4 Fresh Skin
In a post-quarantine world, wearing a full face of foundation feels foreign and maybe a bit unnecessary. Allowing our skin texture to come through is having a moment in 2021 as we move away from contouring and full-coverage looks. Self-care has taken the main stage as we stay at home and indulge in our skincare routines.
For makeup, skin tints have made a name for themselves in recent years as a form of light, barely-there coverage combined with skincare. By eliminating some inevitable face redness that accompanies masking up all day, skin tints are the perfect way to ease back into social life with little effort. And if you still think your brows need a little assistance, try our Definer Eyebrow Pencil to complete your look.
#5 Statement Lip
For the moments you aren't wearing your face mask, more than likely while in the comfort of your home, long-wearing lip stains are an excellent option for a statement lip. With most of our time spent at home nowadays, it's perfect for testing out bright colors and find your signature shade.
While the liquid lipstick of 2016 brings back memories of dry, cracked lips, formulations of 2021 provide relief and comfort (in addition to long wear). Our Pearl or Matte Liquid Lip Gloss is an excellent hybrid of long wear and comfort, as well as a shade range to find your next favorite hue.
